What are 5-letter words?
5-letter words are English words made of exactly five letters, from everyday terms like about, house and water to sharper picks like crane, zesty and jazzy. Five letters is the sweet spot for word games: long enough that guessing needs a plan, short enough that a good clue can solve the puzzle in a few tries. That balance is why 5-letter words power Wordle-style daily puzzles, and why they appear again and again in Scrabble racks, crosswords and spelling practice.
You will find every grammatical type in a five-letter word list: nouns (table), verbs (climb), adjectives (happy), adverbs (often), plurals (books) and past tenses (asked). This variety is exactly what makes a searchable 5-letter words list useful: you can narrow it by start, ending, inner letters or exact positions until only a handful of answers remain.
5-letter words for Wordle
Wordle and the many games inspired by it ask you to find a hidden five-letter word in six guesses. Every guess returns color feedback, and the finder above turns that feedback into a filtered list of 5-letter words that are still possible. Use the Wordle solver to enter your guesses on a tile board, or the finder above to type greens, yellows and grays by hand.
Pick a strong opening word
A good first guess tests many common letters at once. Popular choices include crane, slate, stare, trace and adieu. Open the best Wordle starting words page to see 5-letter words with five different letters, ranked by how common those letters are in this list.
Lean on letter frequency
Vowels such as E, A, O and I, plus consonants like R, T, L, S and N, show up in most five-letter words. Rare letters (J, Q, X, Z) are poor early guesses unless a clue points to them.
Watch for double letters
Words like apple, funny and sleep repeat a letter. If a yellow letter might appear twice, type it twice in the include field and the finder will only return 5-letter words containing both copies.
Think about word endings
Many five-letter words end in S, E, Y, D or R. Once your early guesses lock the middle, filter by ending (for example ED, ER or LY) to cut the list quickly.
5-letter words for Scrabble and other word games
Five-letter words are a staple of Scrabble because they fit neatly on the board and often reach bonus squares. This tool shows a tile score next to every word, so you can sort 5-letter words from highest to lowest value. The high-value letters are Q and Z (10 points each) and J and X (8 points each). For example, jazzy earns 33 points from its tiles alone, before any bonus squares.
Use the word unscrambler or Scrabble word finder when you hold a rack of letters: type your tiles, add ? for a blank, and see which 5-letter words you can build. The same list also helps with crosswords, anagram puzzles and vocabulary practice.
How to find 5-letter words from clues
Choose the search that matches what you know, then combine as many clues as you like. Every clue narrows the list of 5-letter words further.
First letters
Starts-with mode returns every 5-letter word that begins with your letters, such as CR for crane, crisp or crowd.
Last letters
Ends-with mode finds words by suffix. Try ED, ER, LY or S to see plurals and past tenses.
Letters inside
Include letters that appear anywhere in the word. Add the same letter twice to require a double.
Letters in order
Enter letters that must appear in sequence with gaps allowed. AE in order matches words where A comes before E.
Fixed positions
Green boxes lock a letter in place. A pattern like _ _ A _ E leaves only the matching 5-letter words.
Excluded letters
Gray letters are removed from the results, so impossible 5-letter words disappear immediately.
Common 5-letter word patterns
Many five-letter words share recognizable shapes. Each shape below links to a full list of matching 5-letter words.
Double letters: apple, happy, funny, sleep, glass. Useful when a letter feels like it appears twice.
Common endings: words ending in ED (asked, baked), ER (water, After style comparatives and agent nouns), LY (truly, daily) and LE (table, simple). Even ing shows up in short stems like being and doing.
Opening blends: CR (crane, crisp), ST (stare, stone), SH (share, shine), FL (flame, float), TR (trace, train) and QU (quiet, queen).
Few or no vowels: words that rely on Y as a vowel, such as crypt, nymph, glyph and tryst.
Palindromes: five-letter words that read the same backwards, like level, radar, civic, kayak and refer.
