How patterns work

Each underscore or question mark stands for one unknown letter and each typed letter must match its exact position. The pattern __A_E matches words such as place and shade; S____ matches every word that starts with S.

Crossword strategy

Fill in the crossing letters you are sure about, then search the remaining blanks. If a clue gives you a first letter and a last letter, C___E usually leaves a short, scannable list. When a pattern gives too many answers, use a crossing word to fix another letter.

Beyond fixed patterns

Need letters that must appear somewhere but not in a known spot? Use the word finder, which also supports included and excluded letters.
